HMDC President Jennifer Walck announces funding of $840,000 over 4 years to the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centreama

St. John’s, NL, March 2, 2018 - The Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. said today that it is expanding its support for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in Newfoundland and Labrador with an $840,000 contribution, invested over four years, to the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre.

The funding will allow the Centre to develop new STEM-related school and general-interest programs, as well as maintain existing STEM programs. Some of these new initiatives include the purchase of a large-scale, interactive floor map of Newfoundland and Labrador, expanded learning camps for elementary and intermediate school students, and enhancements to the Centre’s existing geology and earth sciences exhibits.

“Hibernia fully supports innovative ideas that keep our young people engaged in the sciences, and we applaud Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre for its efforts to keep STEM programs fresh and interesting,” said Jennifer Walck, president of Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. “We believe new attractions such as the map will generate further interest in the STEM fields among the thousands of students who visit the centre, and will complement existing and planned programming.”

“Manuels Rivers offers a unique experience for those who come through our doors and explore our trails,” said Michael Mooney, the Centre’s executive director. “Part of the reason for our success to date is that we constantly evaluate how we can make the overall experience even more meaningful for visitors. Hibernia’s support means we can continue to keep our STEM programs relevant and appealing to our guests, especially our students.”

Hibernia’s contribution to the Centre builds on its previous financial support, including $3 million for construction of the facility and another $1 million to support the development and delivery of curriculum-linked STEM school programs.
